What is the most important thing to you?
A N D R E W
When Mana asked me this question I found it difficult because there are a lot of things that are important to me. However, I will only name a couple which I think are most important.
The first and most important thing in my life is my faith in Jesus, this is the most important thing in my life above all else. It is what sets the foundation for my life, my choices and my principles. I remember a time when I was in a dark place, at the time I thought I was worthless. If Jesus hadn’t helped me through that stage I wouldn’t be here writing this piece. He intervened in so many ways, giving me friends and family to support me. Giving me the courage to express my emotions.
This also gave me the passion for the second most important thing in my life which is serving others. Everyone has struggles and troubles in their lives but there are some who are more troubled than others. It is those people that I believe deserve our compassion. I love helping others, it helps me to engage and form relationships with people around me. It also gives me purpose and meaning to my life. But not only that, it also shows these people that others do care, they are not alone, they don’t have to face whatever struggle by themselves.
I believe that we are all capable of showing compassion for others, we just have to step out of our comfort zone. And my time leading a group of youth to serve out in the community has shown me that. Some people think that ‘serving others’ means giving up everything they have and going to Africa to go help starving orphans. Now don’t get me wrong I am not judging people who do think that, in fact, I admire those people for their courage. But even the smallest acts of compassion can be defined as serving others. This could mean something simple such as giving food to a homeless person, helping at a soup kitchen or charity, being friends with so-called ‘outsiders’. Even listening to someone can help them.
Those are the two most important things in my life. My faith in Jesus and serving others. Thinking back now, I think the two are related. One of the ways that we show our faith is by trying to do what Jesus did. And one of the things we remember him doing is serving others. And that is what I try to achieve in everyday life.
